SAMA expresses regret for the tragic event that occurred recently in Pietermaritzburg regarding the alleged murder of a medical doctor. We send our condolences to the deceased's relatives for the loss that they have suffered. This incident brings to attention the alarming levels of violence in our society toward doctors, especially women doctors. It highlights the vulnerability that women face on a global basis.

Statistics reveal a troubling reality, with one in five women in partnerships experiencing various forms of abuse. Despite these figures, law enforcement agencies are unable to address such acts effectively due to interalia inadequate resources. This leaves women without the necessary protection and support networks.

SAMA appeals for prompt and comprehensive accountability from those who committed this tragedy. Justice must be pursued without holding back. The wider social impact that these catastrophes have on communities, co-workers, and families cannot be ignored.

We call for solidarity in resisting all forms of violence and discrimination and for the law enforcement agencies to act decisively in protecting women and children from these acts. There must be structural changes to prevent future occurrences and create a safer society for all. Our thoughts are with the victim's family during this difficult time, and we hope they find solace and peace in the days ahead.
