SAMA is a registered trade union affiliated to COSATU, a federation of trade unions.  Through its Industrial Relations Unit, SAMA provides members with advice and information on Employment Laws such as the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Regulations that regulate aspects of employment in the Public Service.

In addition, SAMA is admitted as a party at both the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council and the Public Health and Welfare Sectoral Bargaining Council where collective bargaining on matters of mutual interests such as improvements in the terms and conditions of service for all Public Service employees takes place.

Furthermore, staff in the Industrial Relations Unit has the required knowledge and skills to effectively and efficiently represent doctors in disputes related to:

• Unfair labour practices such as unfair conduct by the employer relating to promotion;
• Representation at disciplinary hearings;
• Unfair dismissals for misconduct or incapacity; and
• Assisting in resolving grievances arising in the workplace.
