Grootboom new SAMA chairman, new board of directors elected
Dr Mzukisi
Grootboom, immediate past-chairman of the SA Medical Association (SAMA)
Specialist Private Practice Committee (SPPC), has been elected chairman of SAMA
by National Council.
Immediate
past- and acting chairman since March 2012, Dr Mark Sonderup - Senior
Specialist in the Department of Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital - was
re-elected vice-chairman.
Dr Grootboom,
an orthopaedic surgeon in private practice in Durban, has been actively
involved with the association since 1997 and played a major role in the
unification process in 1998 as a prominent member of the unity motivating
Progressive Doctors Group (PDG).
President of
the KZN Coastal Branch in 2002 and 2009, Dr Grootboom served on the SAMA
finance committee until 2003, becoming deputy chairman of the SPPC in 2004 and
chairman from 2008.
He succeeds
Dr Norman Mabasa as chairman, Dr Mabasa having been appointed as MEC for Health
and Social Development, Limpopo Province, earlier in the year.
Prof Zephne
van der Spuy, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the
University of Cape Town, was formally inaugurated as President of SAMA while Prof
Ames Dhai, head of bioethics at the University of the Witwatersrand, was elected
President-Elect for the 2013/2014 term.
