SAMA's Public Sector Doctors' Committee addresses the conditions of service and remuneration of salaried doctors and represents doctors - collectively or individually - in terms of labour relations legislation and negotiations. The Committee structure facilitates participation by doctors in issues that concern them.

SAMA is a registered trade union affiliated to COSATU, a federation of trade unions that represents public sector employees on the Public Sector Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) from where they negotiate with government on labour issues.

In addition, SAMA has representation on the PSCBC and the Public Health and Welfare Sectoral Bargaining Council to help public sector employees negotiate improvements to their terms and conditions of service.

As a member, you have direct access to lobby groups within SAMA that adopt mandates on behalf of constituencies. The groups are:

• ADASA: Academic Doctors Association of South Africa
• JUDASA: Junior Doctors Association of South Africa
  (Interns, community service doctors and students)
• SARA: South African Registrars Association
• SEDHASA: Senior Hospital Doctors Association of South Africa
• RUDASA: Rural Doctors Association of South Africa

Industrial Relations

SAMA's Industrial Relations (IR) Unit provides public sector doctors with information on legislation that regulates employment in the public sector, such as the Labour Relations Act and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, 1997. The IR Unit staff is well trained in industrial relations regulations and procedures and will assist individuals or groups with information and advice to resolve disputes related to:

• Unfair labour practice or dismissal
• Negotiations on salaries and conditions of employment
• Representation at disciplinary hearings 
• The interpretation of the Labour Law 
• Disputes or resolving grievances.
