SAMA is asking GPs to respond to HIV and AIDS
The tragic impact of HIV and AIDS on the health of the South African population must never be underestimated. SAMA is therefore asking that the private sector step up its response against this threat by partnering with the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) on a national HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) campaign in order to test 500 000 people in twelve months.
The DPSA is the largest employer in South Africa representing 140 Government departments, employing 1.3 million people with over 2 million dependents. This project will provide SAMA members with the unique opportunity of not only making a considerable social contribution but also provides them the prospect of significantly expanding their practices.
As a prerequisite to participation in this HCT project all participating GPs must be SAMA members. In order to assist members who wish to up-skill themselves in HIV Counselling and Testing, SAMA and the Foundation for Professional Development, (FPD) are providing an online HCT course. The course offers 5 CEU points on level 2, to all who pass the multiple choice test successfully.

The project offers GPs the following benefits:
- Expand your practice by 2,6 million DPSA employees and their dependants
- Receive referrals directly from the DPSA and Europ Assistance Call Centre
- Enjoy significant new Member benefits
- HIV test kits and condoms delivered to your practice
- Receive access to exclusive SAMA package deals from Vodacom
- Complete an online HCT course and earn 5 CEU points
- Vodacom customers will not pay for data when downloading the HCT course
- MTN customers will not pay for data when downloading the HCT course
- Access SAMA’s newly developed Technology Interface
- Become a member of the SAMA/FPD Accredited Doctor's Network
Geo Mapping of your practice
SAMA has developed a Geo-Mapping tool that will map General Practitioners' practice's location. This tool will be available for the general public to search and find a doctor that has registered and operates in the SAMA/FPD network of doctors. For this project the online Geo-mapping tool will be used by the DPSA's health and wellness units as well as europ assisitance’s national call centre to locate doctors in the area of the state employee, and to refer the patients to such a doctor.
Doctor's Unique Website
Each participating doctor will receive a unique website from SAMA. The website will market each doctors’ credentials and practice’s location for the public to view. Concurrent to this public view page, each participating doctor will receive a private SAMA Homepage, to capture data and remain in contact with SAMA.
Computer packages
In support of this project, Vodacom has provided spectacular product bundles exclusively to SAMA members. This will allow those SAMA members who have not joined the electronic age, or those who want to upgrade their computers the opportunity to do so without breaking the bank.
SAMA is therefore appealing to all GPs to get involved in the SAMA - DPSA HIV Campaign because it is our moral obligation to respond to HIV and AIDS.
