SAMA Media Statement: Public Service Shift System

17 MAY 2023

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) represents the interests of members and is concerned that the Limpopo Department of Health (the “DOH”) is in the process of implementing a proposed shift system. These changes to the working conditions may affect the commuted overtime system of its members.

The association has endeavoured to establish clarity on this issue with the provincial department with no avail. Further the DOH has also issued correspondence addressed to various heads of departments dated 29 March 2023 in which it expressed its intention to review the commuted overtime system.

SAMA, has through its attorneys, written to the Department informing/cautioning them that the implementation of the proposed shift system may have severe prejudicial consequences for the doctors affected. It may also have the effect of unilateral changes to the terms and conditions of its members’ employment and in particular to the commuted overtime system.

The association appeals for a facilitated meeting with the DOH together to better understand the process undertaken by the DOH. SAMA is open to discussions with the department and will do its utmost to protect the interests of its members.
