Updates to COVID-19 Treatment Rapid Reviews and addition to technical resources on NICD Website

Members, Since early in April, the National Essential Medicines List Sub-Committee on COVID-19 has been publishing rapid reviews of evidence available for treatment options for COVID-19.

These reviews have aimed to conduct rapid evidence synthesis reports of therapeutics for the management of COVID-19.

COVID-19: Revised Guidelines for symptom monitoring and management of workers for SARS-CoV-2 infection (version 5: 19 August 2020)

The National Department of Health has published Revised Guidelines for symptom monitoring and management of workers for SARS-CoV-2 infection (version 5: 19 August 2020). In the new guidelines, by voluntary agreement, healthcare workers exposed and quarantined may now return to work after 5 days if they test negative and are still well.

Nedbank Medical Professional Funding Package

To support the Medical Practitioners affected by the national lockdown, Nedbank launched a Medical Professional Funding Package at the beginning of May.

The initial package was an unsecured overdraft facility of up to R200 000, payable from September. We have now extended the offer to the end of November. Thereafter, the facility will become a medium-term loan payable over 18 months.

MBA Research: Predicting Clinicians’ Intentions Towards the Electronic Health Record (EHR)

This research study will only focus on the EHR system. Only physicians are requested to partake in this research as physicians have been identified as the key deciding stakeholders in utilising electronic health platforms and have the ability to influence technology use within the healthcare community.

The National Department of Health has indicated that it will take comments on the current version (2019) of the Adult Hospital Level Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs) and National Essential Medicines List (EML), which are the basis of the offering at district and regional hospitals in the public sector

On the opening day of the World Health Assembly today (Monday), the WMA presented a statement describing the situation as an international emergency that was intolerable.

Knowledge, attitudes and current practices of pharmacovigilance amongst medical doctors and pharmacists

As a result of the Thalidomide tragedy in the 1960’s, pharmacovigilance was developed, and its scope has evolved over the years. Scientific evidence has demonstrated that although medicines make a huge and positive contribution to humankind, they also cause undesired effects. It has been found that approximately 50% of medicine-related patient harms that lead to hospitalization are preventable.

The BHF Conference Programme Committee has extended the deadline for abstract submissions and case studies to 28 August 2020. Some abstracts will be published in the BHF’s peer-reviewed ‘Southern African Health Journal’ and on the BHF digital platforms.
